Catmint 'Blue Elf' (Nepeta grandiflora 'Blue Elf') Herb in 9 cm Pot
Catmint 'Blue Elf' or Nepeta 'Blue Elf' is a hardy perennial which will form a compact clump over time it has square stems and pointed leaves. The leaves have a minty aroma, hence the common name name, and small purple flowers are produced in spikes which grow to 3 inches long. Unlike other Catmints this variety is much lower growing making it great as an edging plant or towards the middle of the border. It will flowers from Spring to September if you cut back once maybe even twice in a season it will flower again reaching a spread of 50 cm -1m and a height of up to 30 cm given time and the right growing conditions. Catmint prefers well drained soil, preferably in a sunny position, and dislikes wet winters. Catmint is scented and attractive to bees, and will be an attractive addition to the herb garden. Cut back hard in autumn for vigorous new growth in spring. Divide large clumps in spring or autumn.
Herb Usage
Catmint is most recognised for its effect on cats, and it has been documented the scent of bruised leaves of Catmint can cause cats to roll in it, paw it, lick it and/or heavily salivate. Some have even been known to exhibit aggressive behaviour in its presence. As a herb, the leaves of Catmint were used for medicinal purposes, but now it is seen as a decorative plant, used in pot pourri.
