Mugwort as Artemesia is commonly known is a tall growing perennial plant which can be seen in hedgerows and riverbanks. It is a tall perennial 1-1.5m in height the stems of which are purplish with dark green leaves which are downy underneath, and it has a green/grey flower. Native to northern temperate regions it will grow in damp conditions.
Mugwort has been used for centuries as a medicinal and protective herb. Mugwort was used to repel insects, especially moths, from gardens. Mugwort has also been used against fatigue and to protect travellers against evil spirits and wild animals. It is said that Roman soldiers put mugwort in their sandals to protect their feet against fatigue. It is said that sprays or it were worn on St. John's Eve to protect from evil possession, in Europe one of its other common names is St. John's Plant, because of the belief, that if gathered on St. John's Eve it gave protection against diseases and misfortunes. Different species of Mugwort are found all over the world such as China and Korea where it is used both medicinally and as a culinary herb but it has a bitter taste so it is not recommended.
Our potted Mugwort White herb plants are generally available to buy online between May and September.
