Strawberry Spinach (Chenopodium capitatum) Herb Seeds.

Chenopodium capitatum, most commonly known as 'Strawberry Spinach', 'Strawberry Sticks' or 'Strawberry Bite'. Strawberry spinach is an unusual annual plant, whose flowers are small developing into small pulpy, bright red, edible fruits resembling strawberries, hence the name. Originally from the Americas, the juice from the flowers was used as a red dye by natives.   It is easy to grow and very attractive ideal for the border or containers. It prefers a sunny position in any fertile, well drained garden soil and will flower from June to August and grow to a height of 40cm. The fruits contain small, black, lens-shaped seeds that are 0.7-1.2 mm long. The greens are edible raw or as a potherb, but if raw should be eaten in moderation as they contain oxalates. Give this a go from seed - its well worth it!

Herb Usage

The berries are really grown more for their visual appeal than taste, you can eat the berries in salads, they can also be used as red food colouring.  The greens are edible raw or as a pot herb, but if raw should be eaten in moderation as they contain oxalates. Better to use this as a spinach substitute and cook the leaves.

Growing Instructions

Sow in pots or module trays in the Spring. Cover seed with vermiculite.Maintain min 15'C.
