Saffron Crocus(Crocus Sativus) 7cm Pot
Crocus Sativus are dwarf, deciduous perennials they grow from a corm. They have small strap-like leaves which are often striped with silver. The relatively large goblet shaped pale purple fragrant flowers appear in autumn, it is the bright red Stigma that are harvested and dried for Saffron. It is found in the East Mediterranean where it is cultivated as a crop which is worth more than its weight in gold ! Why not try to grow your own? Grow in flower borders , in a Gravel Garden or in a container.
Being from the Mediterranean crocus require a sunny, free-draining site in the border. Plant 10cm (6in) deep. You can further propagate your crop by dividing clumps in Spring.
Herb Usage
Saffron has a variety of uses, generally it is infused into dishes and is used extensively in the Mediterranean and into Asia. The stigmas should be picked for drying mid morning when the flowers are fully open and dry. It can be used as a flavouring and food colourant especially found in rice dishes such as saffron rice or in a Biriyani. A few strands can be added to the water when boiling potatoes as a great accompaniment to fish dishes.
