Meadowsweet Golden (Filipendula ulmaria 'Aurea' ) Herb in 1Litre Pot
Golden Meadowsweet or Filipendula ulmaria 'Aurea' is a perennial herb the native version of which is often found growing in damp meadows, ditches and bogs, at the edges of ponds, on river banks and in damp open woodland, hence this plant needs plenty of water so moist soil conditions are perfect. Common throughout Europe, it is also be found in the eastern US and Canada as far west as Ohio.
Meadowsweet is also known as 'Bridewort', 'Meadow Queen', Meadow-wort', Lady of the Meadow' and 'Meadowsweet.' Preferring moist semi shade, Meadowsweet will colonise areas if left to its own devices.
This is a beautiful golden leaved variety, it spreads with creeping rootstock, and will send up a reddish, angular stem, up to 90cm tall, that is branched near the top. Each branch holds pinnate golden-yellow leaves that are downy white underneath. The small, creamy-white five-petaled flowers are a stunning display, as they have over twenty protruding stamens, and these grow in clusters from June to August. The flowers have a sweet honey and almond like fragrance and the leaves smell like wintergreen.
Herb Usage
Meadowsweet has been used as a medicinal herb for centuries, its pleasant smelling leaves and flowers meant that it was used in medieval times as a type of air freshener by being strewn on floors to give rooms a pleasant aroma. It has been used to flavour wine and beer hence meadow-wort as a common name. The flowers can be added to stewed fruit and jams, giving them a subtle almond flavour. It has many medicinal properties which have been documented such as a remedy for an acidic stomach, and the fresh root is often used homeopathic preparations. Dried, the flowers are used in potpourri.
