Origanum vulgare 'Aureum Crispum' (Oregano, Golden Curly) Herb in 9cm Pot
Golden Curly Oregano or wild majoram as it is also known is an extremely aromatic herb that has wrinkled yellow-green leaves that look their best in Spring. Grown primarily for its culinary use this variety also makes an attractive foliage plant.
Native to the Mediterranean and Southern Europe, growing 30cm tall and preferring light well-drained soil, Golden Curly Oregano prefers a sunny site and does not particularly enjoy prolonged wet winters, but its hardy nature means can remain evergreen through the winter months, if not it will some form a bushy compact plant again in spring. The bright golden/green oval leaves grow profusely on short purple/brown stems, and a very pretty show of purple-pink flowers appears in the summer.
Herb Usage
Curly Golden Oregano is an aromatic herb, whose flavour features heavily in Mediterranean and Mexican food, as it has a great affinity for a variety of foods, especially bold flavours like tomatoes, olives and meats like lamb. It works well in stuffing mixes and egg dishes, too. Oregano is closely related to marjoram, and is also present in many Greek dishes (particularly those featuring lamb). Oregano's flavour is enhanced with drying and is often sprinkled liberally on pizzas.
