Oregano (Origanum vulgare) Herb in 9cm Pot
Oregano is an extremely aromatic green herb, native to the Mediterannean and Southern Europe, Oregano is closely related to marjoram. Growing 45-60cm tall and preferring light well-drained soil, Oregano prefers a sunny site and does not particularly enjoy prolonged wet winters, but its hardy nature means can remain evergreen through the winter months. The bright green oval leaves grow profusely on short purple/brown stems, and a very pretty show of purple-pink flowers appears in the summer. Ideal for the front of a border in your herb garden or herbaceous border, a rock or gravel garden, great as an edging plant and good ground cover, it's also happy in a container.
Herb Usage
A pungent flavour featuring heavily in Mediterranean and Mexican food, it has a great affinity for a variety of foods, especially strong flavours like wine, olives and tomatoes, vegetables, stuffing and egg dishes. It is also characteristic of many Greek dishes (particularly lamb). Oregano's flavour is enhanced with drying and is often sprinkled liberally on pizzas.
