Wall Germander , is not often talked about nowadays, but it is it may be hard to ignore this plant if you are concerned about the decline in bees as it is very good at attracting them. Wall Germander is a shrubby aromatic perennial with a creeping rootstock. It has dark, deeply veined leaves 30mm long which are dark-green & shiny Wall Germander is also known as ground Oak due to the shape of its leaves. The smell released from the leaves when crushed makes them prized for crafts.  Wall germander forms purplish-pink flowers in loose spikes which appear in summer and autumn. 

Wall germander will reach a height of about 25cm with a slightly greater width. Wall Germander was traditionally used in knot gardens, if you want to form a quick, tight hedge, space individual plants 6 inches apart. For a looser, more casual hedge, space them 1 foot apart.  As its name implies it will also grow in a dry stone wall .

In cold areas it may drop its leaves but generally it is evergreen, it may require mulching around the roots in particularly cold/exposed sites to protect over-winter.

Herb Usage

Wall Germander has been used for a number of remedies over the centuries including gout when drunk as a herbal tea, but its herbal use has fallen out of favor due to evidence that it can harm the liver.  The leaves are used to flavour liqueurs, vermouth and tonic wines. Florists often dry the stems of the plant before using them in wreaths or potpourri. 

Should not be confused as Hedge germander!
