Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) Herb Seeds
Native to Europe and Britain, Valeriana officinalis is a hardy perennial that grows to 1.5m tall, and produces heads of sweetly scented pink or white flowers which bloom in the summer months. Other names used for this plant include Garden Valerian (to distinguish it from other Valeriana species), Garden Heliotrope (although not related to Heliotropium) and All-heal.
Valerian prefers to grow in a sunny position, and will cope in any soil, although it does prefer some moisture and will do well in damp places. Once established, it will self seed readily - remove seed heads after flowering to stop it becoming too prolific.
Herb Usage
Valerian was used as a perfume in the sixteenth century.
The roots are processed and used medicinally as an aid to sleep, and crushed roots can be steeped in water to make a sedating tea.
CAUTION: NOT TO BE TAKEN IN LARGE QUANTITIES FOR EXTENDED PERIODS.
