Chaste Tree (Vitex agnus-castus) Herb Plant
Vitex agnus is a spreading aromatic shrub native to the Mediterranean. It has violet flower spikes that appear in late summer the shrub can grow up to between 1 to 5 meters in height. . It will grow in full sun to partial shade in well-drained soil. The tree may survive in cooler Northern climates but may not bear fruit since it needs prolonged summer heat and may require some frost protection.
Herb Usage
The Chaste Tree has long been used in herbal medicine and has many other common names such as Chaste tree, Chasteberry, Abraham's balm, lilac chaste-tree, or monk's pepper. It common name Chaste Tree derives from its purported anaphrodisiac quality it is said that Monks used to chew the berries and leaves of this tree to reduce the urges of the flesh! The berries can be dried and used as a substitute for pepper and they are also used in various spice blends in the Middle East. The aromatic leaves can be used as a seasoning and a perfume is made from the flowers.
