Welsh Onion (Allium fistulosum) Herb Seeds.

Despite the common name Welsh Onion has nothing to do with Wales they are in fact probably from Asia and are regularly used as an ingredient in Asian cuisine. They are particularly important in China, Japan, and Korea, hence the other English name for this plant, Japanese bunching onion. Welsh onion is a bulbous bunch forming herbaceous perennial with a strong onion or garlic scent, it produces cylindrical bulbs, pencil thick stems and hollow leaves up to 30cm. Producing a pretty umbel of bell shaped yellow-white flowers on a leafless stem, this mid-summer show can be quite lovely. They do have a culinary use but can also be grown to feature in flower borders and beds especially popular in Cottage style planting and Informal Gardens. They enjoy full-sun to partial shade but also like to be kept moist. Dead-Head After flowering to allow all the nutrients back onto the bulb and avoid self seeding unless this is desired.

Herb Usage

Welsh onions can be used as a scallion or salad onion, the lower stems can be used like leeks in soups, stews and omelettes, but whether you sprinkle them raw over salads with all their vitamins intact or cook them in a stir fry, these onions have high levels of vitamins A and C and calcium along with compounds that promote heart health and may help prevent cancer, they may be the most nutritious onions you can grow.

Growing Instructions

Plant Welsh onion seeds indoors in March. Keep the soil lightly moist until the seeds germinate, which generally takes seven to 10 days. Plant the seedlings out 8 inches apart after about a month, when all danger of frost has passed. they prefer full sun but will tolerate a bit of light shade.
