Melissa officinalis (Lime Balm)Herb in 1 litre Pot

Lime balm (Melissa officinalis) is a perennial herb that is part of the mint family, it shares many characteristics with its cousin lemon balm in that it is as easy to grow and is a robust grower!,  but it has a distinct gentle lime-scented foliage. Originally from southern Europe and the Mediterranean region, it grows up to 70cm–1m tall. Lime Balm will tolerate most soil types, but prefers a well-drained site in full-sun or partial shade.

During the summer months it produces small creamy-white or pale purple flower spikes that are full of nectar, which attract bees, hence the genus name Melissa (Greek for 'honey bee')

Herb Usage

Lime Balm has many uses, as a culinary herb it can be infused to make teas as well as flavouring ice-creams, it is also used as a herb for stuffing poultry. The addition of lime balm will add a lime zing to cooking in general, and is a useful addition to the herb garden. Harvest throughout the summer by snipping or pinching out the growing tips, it will keep regenerating all summer. Other uses include the leaves being crushed and rubbed onto the skin to repel insects.
