White Catmint (Nepeta x faassenii 'Alba') Herb seed

White Catmint or Nepeta x faassenii 'Alba' is a hardy perennial which has square stems and pointed leaves. The leaves have a minty aroma, hence the name, and small white flowers are produced in spikes which grow to 3 inches long. It flowers from spring to September to a spread of 50 cm and a height of up to 25 cm. Catmint prefers well drained soil, preferably in a sunny position, and dislikes wet winters. Catmint is scented and attractive to bees, and will be an attractive addition to the herb garden.

Growing Instructions

To Sow indoors (either Late winter to late spring or late summer to autumn) sow seed on the surface of lightly firmed, moist seed compost in pots or trays. Cover seed with a light sprinkling of compost or vermiculite. Keep the surface of the compost moist but not waterlogged. Germination 7 to 21 days at temperatures of 16 to 22°C (60 to 70°F). When large enough to handle, transplant seedlings into 7.5cm (3in) pots. Overwinter the autumn sowings indoors and plant out the following spring. Gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions for 10 to 15 days before planting out after all risk of frost, 30cm (12in) apart.

Can also be sown direct when all risk of frost has gone, directly where they are to flower. They can be broadcast in drifts or can be sown in rows in beds and borders. Sow the seed in short drills 12mm (½ in) deep from March to May, at temperatures around 20°C (68°F). Cover lightly with soil. Seeds germinate in two to three weeks.  Thin the seedlings out so they are finally 30cm (12in) apart by early summer. Alternatively, leave them to grow as small clumps, of 4 to 6 plants every 30cm (12in) or so. Compost should be kept slightly moist at all times, but do not over-water.

Herb Usage

Catmint is most recognised for its effect on cats, and it has been documented the scent of bruised leaves of Catmint can cause cats to roll in it, paw it, lick it and/or heavily salivate. Some have even been known to exhibit aggressive behaviour in its presence. As a herb, the leaves of Catmint were used for medicinal purposes, but now it is seen as a decorative plant, used in pot pourri.
