Basil, Sweet (Ocimum basilicum) Herb Seeds
An improved variety of Common Basil, this is a sweet variety, resistant to Fusarium wilt. A vigorous upright plant with bright green leaves and numerous stems, Basil is considered an annual in Britain, but can have its life extended if it is brought indoors when the weather cools. As a culinary herb, Basil needs to be cut to ensure continued leaf production, as if left to its own devices, will become woody and produce small white flowers.
Ideally grown in pots or containers.
Growing Instructions
Sow in pots or module trays to minimise root disturbance.Cover seed with vermiculite.Maintain min 15'C. Germination 14-21 days. Water early in the day. Sow from February to June, or sow throughout the year inside out of season.
Herb Usage
Used in traditional pesto, this aromatic herb is ideal for cooking, either as a garnish or to add freshness to pasta, salads and chicken dishes. Originating in warm tropical regions, Basil has become synonymous with the Mediterranean, where the hot sunny climate allows it to thrive. It does not do well outdoors in cool Summers.
