Oenothera biennis or Evening Primrose is a hardy biennial that is widely cultivated for its oil, Evening Primrose goes by a host of names including 'Evening Star', 'Fever Plant', 'King's cure-all' and 'Moths Moonflower.'
Aside form its usefulness as a medicinal herb, Evening Primrose is an exceptionally attractive plant, and can grow to 1.2m tall. With its lance-shaped green leaves and bearing large evening-scented, yellow, trumpet shaped flowers in its second year which flower early summer and into autumn Evening Primrose is definitely a meadow plant worth having in the border. The plant prefers a sunny site and free draining soil, but generally not fussy.
Well known as a health food supplement where its essential oil is taken as it is reputed to have particular benefits to health, including treating Eczema and other Skin Ailments, it is also used to treat PMS and menopausal symptoms. All parts of the plant are edible the leaves can be eaten in salads before the plant flowers. The flowers can be used as an edible garnish in salads or in deserts they have a sweet taste and additionally, the roots of this versatile plant can be cooked like parsnips.
