Balloon Flower (Platycodon grandiflorus) Herb in 9cm Pot
This perennial herb is fully hardy, herbaceous perrenial and is also known as Chinese balloon flower. The Balloon Flower has blue-green leaves with balloon like buds opening to reveal bell-like blue flowers 5cm across, these appear June-September it is part of the Campanula family sometimes listed as Campanula grandiflora.
The balloon flower will grow to a height of 60cm it likes deep, light, fertile soil which needs to be kept moist but should be well-drained. It prefers full sun or partial shade. The top growth will disappear completely over the winter and will not appear until late in Spring so be sure to mark where you planted it! May need support due to the flower size. it also does not like being moved once established.
Herb Usage
The balloon flower is native to China and Korea and as such has been used traditionally for cooking and in their medicine. In Korea the root is used as a vegetable in a traditional dish called bibimbap, it is said to have a bitter taste. The root is also used to make desserts and can be made into a syrup or a tea. In medicine in both China and Korea it has been used to treat chest complaints , colds and sore throats among other complaints.

I never expected to purchase my favourite Balloon flowers from a herb company - (I didn't realise they were a herb!). Because of Covid-19 and wanted more plants, I searched on the Internet found them on HooksGreenHerbs and received 6 healthy and well packaged plants in a short delivery time. Like my own plants they are yet to flower but expect them to give me a lovely display when they do.
