'Tangerine' Sage or Salvia elegans 'Tangerine' is a tender perennial herb that can grow up to 60cm tall. Originating from the mountain regions of Central America, and thus preferring warmer climates than we traditionally experience in the UK. Tangerine Sage can still thrive here predominantly in the South of England if positioned in a sheltered, well-drained soil in a sunny site. 'Tangerine' Sage must be given protection from cold and excessive wet in the winter. Elsewhere it makes a great container plant which can be moved under cover as bringing in from the cold before any risk of frost this will extend the flowering period. Tangerine Sage will put on a show of bright red trumpet-shaped flowers in summer, given the right conditions. The leaves are small and oval shaped, and have a wonderful scent of tangerine. Once hit by frost, the plant will die back, and come up again the following spring, providing it is not waterlogged. Dead heading the old flowers will encourage new flowers.
Sage has been used for centuries as a culinary herb, Tangerine Sage is grown as a tender perennial herb plant primarily for its flowers, which are highly attractive to bees and butterflies. However, the leaves and flowers can be used to flavour food and drinks. The leaves can be snipped into salads and the flowers make an attractive addition to a salad too. In addition the leaves add a herby tangerine taste to fruit drinks and cocktails or on their own make a refreshing tea.
Our potted 'Tangerine' Sage herb plants are generally available to buy online between May and September, plant out once risk of frost has past, and grow in a container if frosts are prevalent in your area so it can be moved inside to protect from frost overwinter.
