Heartsease (Viola tricolor) Herb Seeds
Heartsease or Viola tricolor or is a delightful wild flower that can grow up to 12cm tall, and spread about the same. Heartsease is also known commonly as wild pansy or Johnny Jump up. Preferring light, well-drained soil and a partially sunny site, Hartsease will produce beautiful 3-petaled blooms in a variable pattern of purple, lavender and yellow, from April to September, giving an extended show of colour. Once established Heartsease will self seed happily and naturalise an area of garden or wooded area over time.
Growing Instructions
Sow in pots/seed trays. Can be sown indorrs almost any time of the year , the best times are March to plant out in summer or September to plant out early spring. Cover seed with a thin layer of compost. Maintain min 15'C. Germination 14-21 days. Keep moist. Can also be sown direct where you would like them to flower in April -August.
Herb Usage
Viola tricolor or Heartsease has been traditionally used in herbal medicine for treating epilepsy, bronchitis, asthma, and cold symptoms, skin diseases, and eczema. Heartease has been used as a depurative, meaning that it has a non specific cleansing action which some believe to be beneficial in skin conditions like acne.
The delightful little edible flowers can be used in salads, set in to jellies, crytalise or candy to decorate your summer puddings and cakes.
